My friend, Jeremy, had a good idea and listed 5 albums that “meant a lot” to him. Not, “these are the best albums ever,” nor, “these are my all time favorites.” Just simply, five great albums, and he asked others to share. I briefly did so in his comments, but thought I’d put a few more moments into it here. So this is my list, based on the same basic criteria and in no particular order and just for fun, how I discovered them:
- The Killers - Hot Fuss: Pat introduced me to this one, I’ve listened to this for hours and hours.
- Ben Lee - Awake is the New Sleep: I was evaluating whether I wanted XM Radio or not, listening from their website and Gamble Everything for Love came on, one of the few times I’ve liked one song enough to go buy the whole album. Lucky for me I enjoyed the rest of the album just as much.
- Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon: Ross, my brother, has definitely influenced my music listening over the years. One weekend I went to visit him while he was in college (I was in high school) and he bought me Dark Side and Pulse (great live Pink Floyd album). Then either that weekend or soon after, me, him, and a friend of his, Scott, listened to the album straight through (only way to do it). I’ve been hooked ever since.
- Neil Young - Harvest: This is another case of Ross influencing my music taste. He’d told me I would probably like Neil young, so one night I borrowed my step-dad’s CD of Decade. Been enjoying Neil Young ever since.
- Son Volt - Trace: Jeremy and I used to be in a band with a guy named Nick. Jeremy had heard of Son Volt before but Nick mentioned them one night and let me borrow this CD.
Like I said, I won’t try to argue for these being the best five ever, and I’d probably re-arrange them forever even if I just called it my favorite list. But they are all albums that at some point in my life I’ve spent a great deal of time listening to, and have usually revisited time after time.
Along with Jeremy, I won’t be tagging anyone either, but if you care to share some of yours, I’d love to hear it.
One Comment
Trace is a great album. Someone gave me my first taste of Son Volt back in 1996 and I thought it was great, been a big alt-country fan ever since.
