Tomorrow I turn 28 … or is it 29, er 27 maybe?
Funny little story for you … one day while working at Capital One (one of my first days actually), one of my coworkers asked how old I was. I hadn’t really answered this question for quite sometime, and as sad as it sounds, I had forgotten. I sat there, trying not to studder, realizing I was talking to some insanely intelligent people, my mind started racing. I was thinking, “Ok, I was born in ’79 it’s now 2001,” or whatever year it was, “so … borrow from the 0, the other 0, the 2. Wait, wait, this is taking too long, it’s 21 years from 79 ti 2000, then add 1, or is it 2, is it before or after April?” Then I realized I was taking entirely too long to answer the question, so I just blurted out, “23.” I had no clue if I’d just provided the correct age, but I knew I was in the ballpark. I felt so stupid. After I got back to my desk I actually figured it out and realized I had given the correct age. Phew.
Whoever said computer nerds are smart and good at math … well, they obviously haven’t met me.
For the record, I will be 28. Ever since the above incident I’ve tried to do a better job at remembering my own age.
